I was diagnosed with small-cell adenocarcinoma (lung) in 9/08, & the upper lobe of my left lung was removed by a lung surgeon. She was part of a group, & following surgery, she handed me over to an oncologist in the group. A month or so after that, that dr left the practice, & I was “given” to another oncologist. In the midst of all this, my fee…

When you are first diagnosed, first you are shocked, confused, overwhelmed, etc. and suddenly you need to come up with a medical “team” to take care of you. How do you go about doing somethng like this? First, start by asking the doctor who has diagnosed you who they would recommend? If it was them or their family member, where would they go and…

    Just because you have insurance....

    Choosing a care team
    Added Dec 28, 2009

Just because you have insurance does not mean your tests, MRIs and other procedures will be covered. Make sure to ASK your healthcare provider if they take your insurance carrier so that you are not out of pocket thousands of dollars from “out of network” expenses. Cancer is expensive enough without additional medical bills.

    Also, check out…

Because of the sun damage to my skin over the years, I started having yearly, whole-body exams in my late 40s. I was determined to stay on top of this thing. Over the years, it was not uncommon for me to have numerous keratoses (pre-cancerous spots) frozen off my hands, arms and face. I felt I was being vigilant and prudent. Then several years …

    Choosing a care team

I was encouraged today in finding an oncologist. I called another doctor to let her know what was going on and just asked her office assistant if she might know a good oncologist. Her office assistant called me back with the name of a person my doctor went to school with: Dr. RobynYoung… Her name sounded very familiar so I started searching …

There is no "right" answer for Multiple Myeloma

    Choosing a care team
    Added Aug 17, 2009

As this cancer is not generally considered curable, there are different opinions on how to deal with it. It can be difficult to get doctors to spell it out comprehensively for you, but here it is:

At the 50,000 foot level, doctors either believe in controlling the disease, or eradicating it. The “control the disease” people think that there…

    How I chose my oncologist

    Choosing a care team
    Added Aug 12, 2009

Really, there’s not much of a story here. You see, my wife is a registered nurse. She worked for 5 years for our family doctor. As a result, there was a little more than a doctor-patient relationship with my family doctor. He wanted the best possible treatment for me, and I wanted the same. I was only 30 at the time of diagnosis and have 4…
